Telematics

What is it?

Telematics is the technology of sending, receiving, and storing information relating to remote objects—in this case, vehicles. It is the combination of telecommunications and informatics.

How it works

A telematics system typically involves a device installed in the vehicle that collects data (like GPS location, speed, fuel consumption, and engine faults) and transmits it via cellular networks to a central server. Fleet managers use this data to track their vehicles, optimize routes, and monitor driver behavior.

Why it matters

Telematics has revolutionized fleet management and insurance (e.g., "pay-how-you-drive" policies). However, traditional telematics usually requires installing a physical piece of hardware (a "black box" or OBD2 dongle) into the car, which is expensive and cumbersome.

The Aximote Advantage

Aximote is a pure software telematics solution. Because modern cars with Android Automotive OS already have the necessary sensors and cellular connections built-in, Aximote eliminates the need for any extra hardware. You get enterprise-grade telematics and data logging simply by downloading an app from the Google Play Store.
