Phantom Drain (Vampire Drain)
What is it?
Phantom drain, also known as vampire drain, is the loss of battery charge that occurs when an electric vehicle is parked and turned off.
How it works
Even when parked, an EV is never truly "asleep." It uses energy to maintain essential systems. The battery management system may occasionally wake up to heat or cool the battery to keep it at a safe temperature. Security features, cellular connectivity for app access, and cabin overheat protection all draw power from the high-voltage battery. Depending on the settings and weather, phantom drain can consume anywhere from 1% to 5% of the battery capacity per day.
Why it matters
If you leave your EV parked at an airport for two weeks, phantom drain can significantly reduce your range by the time you return. Furthermore, constantly waking the car up by checking a smartphone app prevents the vehicle's computers from entering a deep sleep state, actively worsening the energy loss.
The Aximote Advantage
Many third-party smartphone apps cause severe phantom drain because they constantly "ping" the car's servers over the internet to check its location or battery status, keeping the car awake. Aximote is different. Because Aximote is installed directly in the car's infotainment system, it doesn't need to wake the car up over the internet. When the car sleeps, Aximote sleeps. It logs your data perfectly without causing any additional vampire drain, protecting your battery while you are parked.
