If you are walking into a Volvo showroom today looking for a compact electric SUV, you face a fascinating choice. Do you buy the proven, boxy, and highly successful XC40 Recharge? Or do you opt for the brand-new EX30—a slightly smaller, significantly cheaper model built on a cutting-edge, dedicated EV platform? To answer that with evidence, we analyzed anonymized real-world driving data from the Aximote app.

On paper, the WLTP efficiency figures for both cars look remarkably similar (around 17.4 to 18.5 kWh/100km). But the spec sheet doesn't tell the whole story. The XC40 is built on the CMA architecture—a platform originally designed to accommodate combustion engines. The EX30 is built on Geely's SEA2 platform, designed from the ground up exclusively for electric vehicles [1].

Does a dedicated EV platform actually translate to better real-world efficiency? We looked at the data to find out.

Data Source

This analysis is based on 2,078 real-world trips recorded by Aximote users in mild and summer conditions (to eliminate winter heating variables). Because Aximote reads native CAN-Bus telemetry directly from the Android Automotive OS (AAOS), these figures represent actual energy consumed from the battery, categorized by driving speed.

  • Volvo EX30: 1,052 trips (49 vehicles, 51,024 km)
  • Volvo XC40 Recharge: 1,026 trips (44 vehicles, 38,874 km)

The data reveals a massive, unexpected gap in everyday driving: The Volvo XC40 Recharge consumes nearly 50% more energy than the EX30 in mixed daily use.

However, in a surprising twist, when both vehicles hit the highway at speeds over 100 km/h, this massive efficiency gap almost entirely disappears.

The Everyday Driving Bombshell

In mixed, everyday driving the EX30 is a masterclass in efficiency. At 19.1 kWh/100km, it sits just 10% above its official WLTP rating—an incredibly honest real-world result.

The XC40 Recharge, however, averages a staggering 28.4 kWh/100km in the exact same mild weather conditions. That is nearly 54% higher than its official WLTP rating. Why? The answer lies in the platform and the weight. The XC40 Recharge weighs over 2,000 kg (up to 2,188 kg for the Twin Motor version) [2]. More importantly, because it uses a shared ICE/EV platform (CMA), it likely suffers from higher parasitic losses and less optimized low-speed powertrain mapping compared to the EX30's purpose-built SEA2 architecture. In stop-and-go traffic, moving that extra mass takes a heavy toll.

The Highway Convergence

When we filter the data for trips with an average speed above 100 km/h, the narrative flips completely.

The EX30's consumption rises to 21.9 kWh/100km—a normal, expected penalty for pushing a vehicle through the air at high speeds. But the XC40's consumption actually drops to 22.4 kWh/100km.

At highway speeds, aerodynamic drag becomes the dominant force, overriding the penalty of the XC40's extra weight. While the EX30 has a slightly better drag coefficient (0.28) [3], the XC40's powertrain seems to find its sweet spot at constant cruising speeds, free from the punishing physics of accelerating its 2-ton mass from a standstill at every traffic light. On a long road trip, the two cars are virtually tied for efficiency.

What This Means for Your Wallet and Range

If you charge at home (assuming an average European rate of €0.30/kWh), the EX30 will cost you about €5.74 per 100 km in daily driving. The XC40 will cost you €8.53 per 100 km. Over 15,000 km a year, the EX30 saves you over €400 in electricity alone.

In terms of range (usable battery: ~57 kWh for EX30, ~67 kWh for XC40):

  • In the city: The EX30 will drive further (~298 km) than the XC40 (~236 km), despite having a smaller battery.
  • On the highway: The XC40's larger battery finally pays off, delivering roughly 299 km of range compared to the EX30's 260 km.
